Shenandoah County, VA (June 11, 2025) – A deadly two-vehicle crash occurred early Sunday morning, June 8, on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County. Virginia State Police responded to the crash just before 3:00 a.m. near the 284-mile marker.
According to officials, the crash began when a Ford F-150 pickup truck attempted to pass a Toyota RAV4 on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes. The driver of the pickup, 43-year-old Jose O. Torres of Broadway, lost control and struck the SUV. The truck overturned, ejecting Torres, who was not wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV, driven by a woman from San Diego, California, had three adult passengers. She and one passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for treatment. The other two passengers were not hurt. All occupants of the SUV had seatbelts on at the time of the collision. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Virginia
Each year, thousands of crashes occur on Virginia highways, many involving serious injuries or loss of life. According to recent data, over 800 fatalities were reported in Virginia traffic accidents last year alone. The majority of these involved factors such as speed, alcohol, distracted driving, or failure to use seatbelts. To help address this ongoing issue, Virginia continues to promote driver safety and traffic law enforcement efforts statewide.
When dealing with the aftermath of a crash, it’s helpful to understand common injury outcomes. Below are some frequently sustained injuries that victims often suffer during collisions:
- Head and Traumatic Brain Injuries: These can result from direct impact or violent movement during a crash. Even with minor symptoms at first, concussions and brain trauma may evolve into long-term health problems. Timely diagnosis and medical care are crucial.
- Spinal Cord Injuries and Paralysis: Injuries to the back or spine can affect mobility and quality of life. Damage can be permanent depending on the level and severity of the trauma. Rehabilitation and assistive equipment are often required for recovery.
- Broken Bones and Orthopedic Injuries: Fractures can range from simple breaks to complicated compound injuries. These are commonly seen in high-speed accidents and often need surgery or months of physical therapy.
- Soft Tissue Damage and Whiplash: Neck, shoulder, and ligament injuries may not be visible but can cause persistent pain. Whiplash is particularly common in rear-end collisions and can impact daily movement for extended periods.
- Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Beyond the physical toll, victims often deal with emotional fallout. Anxiety, sleep issues, and post-traumatic stress are not uncommon and may require professional support.
