Motorcycle Accidents in Virginia
Motorcycle crashes in Virginia have become a rising concern, with data showing that motorcyclists are significantly more vulnerable to injury than occupants of other vehicles. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, over 1,500 motorcyclists were injured in crashes statewide last year. May through October sees a higher rate of these incidents due to increased ridership in warmer months.
In light of this tragic accident, it’s important to understand the kinds of injuries motorcycle accidents can cause and how they may affect a victim’s life. Below are some of the most common types of injuries suffered in motorcycle crashes:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): Even when wearing a helmet, riders can experience severe head trauma. TBIs can lead to cognitive, behavioral, and physical impairments that can last a lifetime or even be fatal.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the spinal cord can cause permanent disability, including paralysis. These injuries often require long-term rehabilitation and drastically impact a person’s quality of life.
- Fractures and Broken Bones: In motorcycle crashes, arms, legs, ribs, and pelvises are especially vulnerable. These injuries can require surgery, physical therapy, and time away from work or daily routines.
- Road Rash and Severe Lacerations: Without the protection of an enclosed vehicle, motorcyclists are exposed to sliding injuries. Road rash can lead to deep tissue damage and infections if not treated properly.
- Internal Organ Damage: Impact with another vehicle or the ground can cause internal bleeding and organ injuries, which may not be immediately visible but are life-threatening if left untreated.
