Newport News, VA (April 13, 2025) – A pair of early morning crashes disrupted Thursday traffic along Interstate 64, with two people injured after a Honda sedan collided with a VDOT truck near Jefferson Avenue.

The incident began shortly before 7 a.m. on April 10, when a VDOT truck activated its emergency lights while attempting to remove debris from the westbound lanes of the highway. While performing this task, a Honda sedan crashed into the VDOT vehicle, resulting in extensive damage to the car and temporary lane closures. Emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene. Both the sedan’s driver, identified as Kaylyn R. Parsons, and the VDOT employee sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. They were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Authorities have since charged Parsons with following too closely.

A second crash occurred just minutes earlier, around 6:50 a.m., along the same stretch of I-64 near Mercury Boulevard in Hampton. In that incident, an unregistered trailer detached from a vehicle in the left lane, posing an immediate hazard. A Virginia State Police trooper activated his emergency lights to alert approaching drivers of the obstruction. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this second incident, but the event served as a reminder of how quickly road conditions can become dangerous. Both accidents remain under investigation as officials work to determine all contributing factors.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Virginia

Newport News, VA - VDOT and State Police Vehicles Hit in I-64 CrashesVirginia sees thousands of highway accidents each year, many occurring on busy interstates like I-64. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, over 122,000 traffic crashes were reported across the state in 2023 alone. Of those, more than 1,000 resulted in serious injuries. Crashes like these can happen in a split second and leave lasting consequences for those involved.

Understanding how different types of injuries impact victims can help illustrate the importance of taking legal action:

  • Neck and Back Injuries: Often seen in rear-end collisions, these injuries can be subtle at first but worsen over time. Whiplash, herniated discs, and spinal strain can lead to chronic pain and reduced mobility.
  • Concussions and Head Trauma: Even with a seatbelt, the force of a crash can cause the head to snap forward or strike a surface, leading to concussions. These injuries can impair memory, focus, and coordination.
  • Soft Tissue Damage: Strains, sprains, and bruising might not seem serious at first, but they often require physical therapy and rest. The pain and stiffness can significantly interfere with daily life.
  • Emotional Trauma: The emotional toll of a crash can linger long after physical injuries have healed. Many victims experience anxiety or PTSD when returning to driving or even riding in a car.
  • Internal Injuries: Not all injuries are visible. Damage to organs or internal bleeding can be life-threatening without immediate medical attention and sometimes require surgery or long-term treatment.
