King and Queen Co., VA (March 24, 2025) – A collision claimed the life of an EMT on Thursday morning, leaving a Virginia healthcare community in mourning.
The crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. on that day, when a VCU Health Tappahannock ambulance, operated by two AMR employees, collided with a dump truck on Route 360. The dump truck was entering the highway from Fleets Mill Road and had come to a stop in the median when the ambulance struck the truck’s rear corner. The impact caused the ambulance to overturn into the center median. Jacob Bozeman, the EMT driving the ambulance, was pronounced dead at the scene. His colleague, who was also in the vehicle, survived. Authorities confirmed that the ambulance was not en route to an emergency and had no patients inside at the time. Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances of the crash.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Jacob Bozeman and to the entire EMT and healthcare community affected by this loss.
Fatal Accidents in Virginia
Each year, hundreds of lives are lost in traffic crashes across Virginia. According to 2022 statistics from the Virginia DMV, more than 1,000 fatalities were recorded statewide. While many of these collisions involve passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and emergency vehicles are also at significant risk. Rural routes, like those common in Virginia, often feature high-speed limits and limited visibility, increasing the danger for everyone on the road.
In light of this, it’s important to understand how different factors can contribute to crashes involving large or specialty vehicles. Here are some key considerations:
- Blind Spots in Large Trucks: Dump trucks and similar commercial vehicles have larger blind spots than regular cars. These no-zones can obscure smaller vehicles approaching from the rear or sides, increasing the risk of side-swipe or rear-end collisions.
- Stopping Distance: Heavier vehicles require longer distances to come to a full stop. If a truck misjudges the speed of oncoming traffic or brakes late while turning, it may remain partially in the roadway, putting others in danger.
- Complex Intersections: Medians and divided highways like Route 360 often feature challenging layouts. Drivers unfamiliar with an area may miscalculate turns or fail to account for speeding traffic, particularly during low-light morning hours.
- Emergency Vehicles Not on Call: Even when not responding to emergencies, ambulances and fire trucks face risks simply by virtue of being larger, heavier vehicles. Maneuvering in traffic, especially near intersections, carries heightened danger.
- Driver Distraction or Fatigue: Fatigue can affect both commercial and EMS drivers, especially in the early morning hours. A momentary lapse in awareness may result in critical miscalculations, particularly in high-speed zones.
