Henrico Co., VA (May 21, 2025) – A fatal collision along Interstate 295 in Henrico County took the life of a West Virginia man early Monday morning.
The incident happened around 4:15 a.m. on May 19 along the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 near the 45-mile marker. According to Virginia State Police, a vehicle was traveling north when it struck a tractor-trailer that had been stopped on the shoulder of the roadway.
One of the vehicle’s occupants, identified as Trequan Chander of West Virginia, died at the scene due to injuries sustained during the impact. The cause of the collision remains under investigation as authorities work to determine what led up to the crash in the early morning hours.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of Trequan Chander.
Car Accidents in Virginia
Each year, thousands of people are seriously injured or killed in motor vehicle crashes across the state of Virginia. In 2023, over 120,000 traffic crashes were reported statewide, with a significant number occurring on major highways like Interstate 295. These roads, while built for high-speed travel, can become dangerous due to sudden stops, roadside hazards, or poor visibility during nighttime and early morning hours.
There are several key issues that arise frequently in highway collisions like this one:
- Stopped Vehicles on Shoulders: Vehicles that pull over to the shoulder—whether due to a breakdown, emergency, or mechanical issue—are vulnerable to being hit by passing traffic. Drivers may not notice stopped vehicles in time, particularly during low-light hours. Reflectors, hazard lights, and emergency triangles can help reduce this risk, but collisions still occur far too often.
- Nighttime Driving Conditions: Driving in the early morning or at night presents challenges including reduced visibility and increased driver fatigue. Headlights may not adequately illuminate the shoulder or roadway edge, and some drivers struggle to stay alert during these hours, which increases crash risks.
- Highway Speed Impacts: Collisions that occur at highway speeds—especially those involving large vehicles like tractor-trailers—often result in catastrophic damage. The sheer size and weight difference between a passenger car and a commercial truck can make outcomes much more severe for those in smaller vehicles.
- Investigative Delays: In complex crashes, especially those involving commercial trucks, investigations can take time. Police must review dashcam footage, interview witnesses, and analyze crash data to understand what happened and determine liability.
