Hampton, VA (February 22, 2025) – A collision on Interstate 64 East claimed the life of a woman early on Saturday morning, February 22, leading to DUI charges against the other driver, according to Virginia State Police.
Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 1:21 a.m. on February 22, near Settlers Landing Road. Reports indicate that 52-year-old Theresa Michelle Tann was traveling westbound on I-64 when she entered the eastbound lanes. This resulted in a head-on crash with a 2016 Nissan Maxima driven by 35-year-old Latonya Alisha Foster.
Emergency personnel rushed Foster to Hampton Sentara Hospital Careplex, where she succumbed to life-threatening injuries. Tann was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Following the crash, police arrested Tann, who is now reportedly facing charges of driving under the influence. The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Latonya Alisha Foster during this grieving time.
Car Accidents in Virginia
Fatal crashes in Virginia take the lives of thousands of people each year. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, there were over 1,000 traffic fatalities statewide in 2023, with a significant number involving impaired drivers. Drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal accidents in the state, leaving families devastated and communities at a loss.
Understanding the dangers of impaired driving is crucial in preventing future tragedies. Below are some common risks associated with driving under the influence:
- Reduced Reaction Time – Alcohol impairs judgment and slows reflexes, making it difficult for drivers to react to sudden changes on the road. This increases the likelihood of collisions.
- Impaired Coordination – Drunk drivers often experience difficulty maintaining control of their vehicles, leading to erratic movements that can cause serious accidents.
- Poor Decision-Making – Alcohol affects a driver’s ability to assess risks properly, leading to reckless behaviors such as speeding, running red lights, or driving the wrong way on highways.
- Drowsiness and Fatigue – Many impaired drivers struggle to stay awake behind the wheel, further endangering themselves and others on the road.
