Hampton, VA (June 25, 2025) – A Sunday afternoon collision on Interstate 64 claimed the life of a motorcyclist after a three-vehicle crash occurred near Settlers Landing Road.
On June 23, Virginia State Police were called to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 at approximately 2:05 p.m. for reports of a serious crash. Initial findings indicate that traffic had slowed in the left lane due to congestion. A 2022 Nissan Murano and a 2024 Suzuki GSX motorcycle were stopped when a 2000 Ford Excursion, driven by Dionicio Moreno, failed to reduce speed and slammed into the motorcycle from behind.
The impact ejected the motorcyclist, identified as 32-year-old Christopher Matthew Dawson. Emergency crews transported him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died. The roadway was shut down temporarily as investigators examined the scene and crews cleared debris. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
We offer our sympathies to the family of Christopher Matthew Dawson.
Car Accidents in Virginia
Motor vehicle accidents in Virginia remain a significant concern, with thousands of crashes reported annually. According to data from the Virginia State Police, over 122,000 crashes occurred statewide in recent years, with a substantial number resulting in injury or death. These numbers reinforce the need for increased awareness and safe driving habits on Virginia’s roadways.
When motorcycle crashes occur, the physical consequences can be life-altering. The following information may help shed light on why injuries are often so severe:
- Lack of Protection: Unlike enclosed vehicles, motorcycles do not provide a barrier between the rider and the road. This makes even low-speed collisions potentially fatal. Protective gear can help, but the force of impact often results in severe trauma.
- Visibility Issues: Motorcycles are smaller and often overlooked by drivers of larger vehicles. Failure to spot a motorcycle during lane changes or in congested traffic increases the risk of collisions.
- High Impact Crashes: Motorcycles involved in rear-end accidents—like this recent incident—are at risk for being thrown into traffic or ejected, making injuries far more serious.
- Longer Recovery Periods: Motorcyclists who survive collisions may face months or years of rehabilitation due to orthopedic injuries, road rash, and internal trauma. The emotional and financial toll on families can be overwhelming.
- Liability Complications: Determining fault in motorcycle crashes can sometimes be challenging. Insurance companies often try to downplay motorcyclists’ rights, which is why strong legal representation is crucial.
