Fairfax, VA (April 15, 2025) – A high-speed police chase ended in a violent crash on Interstate 66, sending four people, including a Virginia State Police trooper and a young child, to area hospitals.

The incident took place on April 12 during the evening hours, when troopers responded to a suspicious vehicle stopped on the left shoulder of the eastbound I-66 Express Lanes near the 58-mile marker. According to authorities, the driver refused orders to shut off the engine and sped off, prompting a pursuit. As the chase escalated, both the suspect’s vehicle and a pursuing patrol car lost control in the median. The suspect regained control and continued fleeing, but the trooper’s cruiser veered into westbound traffic, slamming into a Honda CR-V carrying a man, a woman, and a four-year-old child.

All three occupants of the CR-V sustained injuries. The man and child have since been discharged from a local hospital, while the woman remained under medical observation overnight. The trooper was also hospitalized but has since been released. A fourth vehicle was damaged after striking crash debris in the westbound lanes.

The fleeing suspect, identified as a 17-year-old from Maryland, was eventually caught after turning onto a dead-end residential road off Route 50. Police say the teen, who was evaluated at a hospital, faces multiple charges including eluding law enforcement, driving without a license, and reckless driving. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Police Chase Accidents in Virginia

Fairfax, VA - Police Pursuit Ends in Multi-Car Crash on I-66Fairfax, VA – Police Pursuit Ends in Multi-Car Crash on I-66Car chases in Virginia frequently result in injuries to bystanders and officers alike. According to Virginia traffic data, hundreds of police pursuits occur annually across the state, often ending in collisions. These crashes can lead to serious physical harm, extended road closures, and legal fallout for everyone involved.

Pursuit-related accidents leave a wide wake of complications for victims. Here’s more insight into some of the dangers and consequences that often follow:

  • Police Pursuits and Injury Rates: High-speed chases greatly increase the chance of collisions, especially when suspects drive recklessly. Even experienced officers can lose control at high speeds. Data shows that innocent drivers and passengers are hurt far too often in the process.
  • Legal Consequences for Fleeing Drivers: Drivers who flee from police can face a range of criminal charges, especially if someone is injured. In Virginia, these offenses carry heavy penalties, and minors involved in such incidents may be prosecuted as adults depending on the severity.
  • Injuries to Children in Crashes: Young passengers are especially vulnerable in vehicle crashes. Even minor accidents can cause lasting harm to children, who often require different medical assessments than adults after a collision.
  • Pursuits in Urban vs. Suburban Settings: High-speed chases through urban areas can result in higher pedestrian risk and more complex crash scenes. Suburban roads, while less crowded, often encourage higher speeds due to longer stretches of open highway.
