Blacksburg, VA (June 28, 2025) – A group of high school students touring the Virginia Tech campus experienced a frightening incident on Wednesday morning when several of them fell through a utility grate near Pamplin Hall. The students, all from Washington County, Virginia Public Schools, were on a school-sanctioned tour of the university when the accident happened.

According to Virginia Tech officials, the students were standing near the atrium windows when the grate gave way beneath them. Ten students reportedly fell, and while many were able to climb out on their own, emergency services responded to evaluate them for injuries.

Seven of the students were treated at the scene. Authorities have not released the current condition of the remaining three individuals. After the incident, the rest of the touring students were moved to Derring Hall for additional care and support. University officials have since barricaded the area of the accident and are reviewing other similar locations around campus to ensure safety.

We hope the injured students heal quickly and are able to return to their summer activities soon.

Premises Injuries in Virginia

Blacksburg, VA - Students Injured After Falling Through Utility Grate at Virginia TechEach year, thousands of people in Virginia experience injuries while visiting public or private properties. Many of these injuries happen due to unsafe conditions, such as faulty walkways, poor maintenance, or hidden hazards. These incidents can involve falls, structural failures, or inadequate warnings, often leading to serious consequences, especially for younger individuals.

When accidents like this happen, it’s important to understand what kinds of premises hazards exist and how they can be prevented:

  • Structural Failures: Old or poorly maintained infrastructure, such as utility grates, stairs, or platforms, can fail without warning. These failures often result in falls and injuries that could have been avoided with timely inspections and repairs.
  • Inadequate Warning Signs: When dangerous areas are not marked or roped off, visitors are at a higher risk of injury. Property owners and institutions have a responsibility to warn the public of unsafe zones and ongoing maintenance.
  • Improper Construction or Installation: Sometimes, a structure fails because it was not built or installed correctly. Whether it’s a grate, handrail, or fixture, improper setup can create serious hazards over time.
  • Neglected Property Maintenance: Routine inspections and maintenance are critical for public safety. When facilities skip regular checks, dangerous conditions can develop unnoticed until someone gets hurt.
  • Overcrowded or High-Traffic Areas: In busy spaces like schools, malls, or campuses, managing pedestrian flow is crucial. When too many people gather in one spot not designed for such weight, it can lead to dangerous collapses or stress failures.
