Accomac, VA (July 2, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision on Route 13 near Parks Road between Accomac and Parksley claimed the life of a Pennsylvania woman and injured several others. The incident took place around 12:20 p.m. on June 30 when a southbound 2018 Subaru Impreza reportedly crossed the median and struck a northbound 2014 Toyota Sienna minivan head-on.
The force of the crash killed 42-year-old Gina Alvarez Dela Cruz of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, who was a front-seat passenger in the minivan. She was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries and later died from those injuries. Seven other occupants in the Toyota, including the driver, 43-year-old Leobert Samon Dela Cruz, suffered injuries of varying severity. The driver of the Subaru, a female, also sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. Three victims had to be airlifted due to the severity of their injuries.
The crash caused a complete closure of both directions of Route 13 in the affected area. Traffic was rerouted onto Route 316 (Greenbush Road) and Parksley Road, resulting in long delays. Southbound traffic was backed up nearly two miles, stretching from the former Parksley Livestock location through Parksley and Greenbush before clearing up south of the detour. Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances of this crash to determine what caused the Subaru to cross into oncoming lanes.
We hope all who were injured in this accident recover fully.
Car Accidents in Virginia
Motor vehicle crashes in Virginia remain one of the leading causes of injuries and loss of life each year. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, thousands of people are seriously injured in crashes annually across the Commonwealth. Many accidents happen because of drivers who fail to remain in their lanes, leading to head-on collisions that often cause catastrophic injuries. Staying alert behind the wheel and following all traffic rules can help reduce these tragic events.
It’s important to remember that victims and their families should know what to expect after a crash. Below are some common injuries suffered in crashes like this:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): Head-on collisions often lead to severe head trauma. TBIs can range from mild concussions to life-altering brain damage. Recovery can involve extensive rehabilitation, long hospital stays, and ongoing care needs.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Spinal injuries are common in high-impact crashes. Damage to the spinal cord can result in partial or complete paralysis, which drastically alters a person’s quality of life and requires lifelong treatment.
- Internal Injuries: Blunt force trauma from a collision can cause internal bleeding or organ damage. These injuries can be life-threatening and sometimes aren’t immediately noticeable, making quick medical attention critical.
- Broken Bones and Fractures: Fractures are frequent in crashes, especially in the arms, legs, ribs, and pelvis. Some breaks may need multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy, keeping victims out of work for long periods.
