Norfolk, VA (May 19, 2025) – A deadly accident on Interstate 64 in Norfolk on Saturday evening left one woman dead and another man injured following a violent two-vehicle collision. The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes near Northampton Boulevard (Exit 282) around 6:30 p.m. on May 17.
Authorities report that 25-year-old Devon Acevero was operating a 2005 BMW at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle. The BMW veered off the roadway, struck a jersey wall, and then reentered traffic, colliding with a 2021 Jeep Cherokee. The impact caused the Jeep to roll over several times before it came to rest off the side of the highway. Acevero and a passenger in the BMW were reportedly unharmed. However, the crash proved fatal for one of the Jeep’s occupants.
Paulette Angela Chambers, 70, of Virginia Beach, was riding as a passenger and died at the scene. The Jeep’s driver, whose name has not been released, was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that authorities describe as non-life-threatening. Virginia State Police have confirmed that Acevero was under the influence at the time of the crash. After consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney, he has been charged with DUI Manslaughter and is currently being held at Norfolk City Jail. Eastbound lanes of I-64 in the area remained closed as the investigation continued.
Our sympathies go out to the family of Paulette Angela Chambers.
Car Accidents in Virginia
In Virginia, hundreds of lives are lost annually in motor vehicle accidents, with impaired and reckless driving remaining significant contributing factors. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, over 120,000 crashes were reported in the Commonwealth in a recent year, with thousands involving alcohol-related factors. These incidents often result in lifelong consequences for the families and communities involved.
In the aftermath of a crash like this, there are key concerns every victim and family should be aware of:
- Impact of Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes in Virginia. Impaired drivers often make unpredictable decisions, increasing the risk of high-speed collisions and rollovers, as seen in this case. These accidents are often preventable and carry severe legal consequences.
- Legal Consequences of DUI: A DUI Manslaughter charge is a felony offense in Virginia. Convicted drivers may face years in prison, loss of driving privileges, and permanent criminal records. The emotional and financial toll on victims and their families can be immeasurable, which is why legal action is often pursued.
- Importance of Timely Medical Treatment: Even if injuries appear minor, seeking immediate care can uncover hidden trauma. Medical documentation is also vital for any potential legal claims. Many car crash injuries do not present symptoms right away.
- Investigations and Evidence: Law enforcement investigations are critical but may not capture all details. Independent investigations by legal teams can help ensure accountability and fair compensation. Video evidence, witness statements, and accident reconstruction play a key role.
If you or someone you love was involved in a crash, it’s essential to connect with a car accident attorney as soon as possible. Having a lawyer on your side from the beginning can make a real difference. They can handle communication with insurance companies, preserve critical evidence, and help ensure your rights are protected. Quick action can also strengthen your chances of receiving full compensation for your injuries and losses.
